Magnitude-4.4 earthquake shakes Southern Calif.
An earthquake east of downtown Los Angeles rippled across Southern California before dawn Tuesday, jolting millions of people awake and putting first-responders on alert.
There are no reports of damage, injuries or power outages linked to the temblor.
“All is calm in the city of Los Angeles,” Los Angeles Fire Department Capt. Steve Ruda said.
Nearly an hour after the quake, the California Highway Patrol got reports of a buckled 10-foot stretch of concrete in a center lane of southbound Interstate 5 south of downtown in the Downey area.
US consulate workers killed in Mexico
The drug wars in Mexico took an ominous turn over the weekend when a US consulate employee and her husband were killed as they left a children’s birthday party in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico’s most violent city. Only minutes earlier gunmen also killed the Mexican husband of another member of the consular staff and wounded his two children.
While a number of US citizens have been killed in Mexico’s increasingly bloody drug wars between rival cartels, it is the first time an American government employee has been killed.
Invincible? Syracuse still has things to prove in Big Dance
Syracuse will look for a Final Four performance and more in the NCAA men’s tournament to prove it did not go from overlooked to overrated in the course of a record-setting season. After being picked sixth in a preseason poll of Big East coaches, the Orange combined selfless play on offense with their trademark 2-3 zone defense to win what is widely regarded as the nation’s toughest conference and briefly climb to the top of the national rankings at the start of March.

Questions Arise in Prius Case
An investigation of the Toyota Prius involved in a dramatic incident on a California highway last week is raising questions about the driver’s version of the event.
The investigation by federal officials along with engineers from Toyota Motor Corp. found a particular pattern of wear on the car’s brakes that doesn’t seem consistent with the driver’s story, three people familiar with the investigation said.

2010 March Madness Bracket predictions best potential games
Let’s start with the toughest Final Four region in the bracket, the Midwest. Kansas received the overall number 1 seed, but were almost punished in the way the region unfolded. Kansas is looking at a potential sweet 16 game against Michigan State or Maryland; two teams that have some of the best coaches in the NCAA and teams that have historically done well in the NCAA Tournament for their respective coaches, Tom Izzo and Gary Williams. If they escape to the Elite Eight, it doesn’t get any easier with Tennessee, Georgetown and Ohio State all on the other end of the bracket. A Georgetown-Ohio State matchup in the Sweet 16 could be an explosive Final Four rematch a few years back when Greg Oden led the Buckeyes into the championship game. Also keep an eye on Tennessee, an unjust 6 seed, going up against San Diego State, fresh off steamrolling the Mountain West tournament. The Volunteers beat both Kansas and Kentucky this year, but would have to beat San Diego State, Georgetown, Ohio State and Kansas to reach Indianapolis. Not likely. I like Kansas surviving because they are the best team in the country, but this is a region that will make or break brackets and have fans on the edge of their seats.

2010 NIT Tournament Bracket Released
Ok, so the season didn’t go exactly as planned but it is still salvageable. At this point of the year there are only two teams that end their season with a win and the NIT will crown one of them as their champions.
There are some major programs that are having a down year by, making the NIT infinitely more marketable. Names like UCONN, UNC, Illinois and Memphis are slumming it this year at Madison Square Garden so it should be entertaining to say the least.
Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Illinois, Virginia Tech all had sat on the bubble coming into this weekend only to see it burst and to earn a high seed in the NIT.
